The Nisenan managed the environment, but with fire, not chemicals ormachines. Excessive brush and grasses were regularly burned. Thispractice renewed the plants they used for food, medicines, and baskets. Wild flowers thrive in burned areas, as do many animals. They alsofostered desirable plants and sustainably harvested key crops. At thissite they harvested acorns from Valley, Blue, and Black oaks, pine nutsfrom the Grey pine, and soaproot, blackberries, manzanita, madrone, and redbud (for baskets).
